Comma Oil Commission Hi-Vis Vests

A class of design students has gone some way to proving that a high-visibilty vest doesn't have to be a fashion faux-pas in an effort to raise awareness of roadside safety among young motorists.
Car care company Comma has been urging motorists to carry a hi-vis vest in their cars as more than 180 people are killed or seriously injured each year by the side of the road.
Research has shown that young people are amongst those most at risk of an accident by the side of the road, with people under 25 accounting for more than 40 percent of the fatalities and injuries over the last 12 months.
Comma commissioned the 18 students at Oaklands College in St. Albans to design hi-vis vests that are cut with a little more panache than the typical roadworker's uniform.
Sporting chic buttons, collars and even feathers, the Oaklands studnets' designs might not meet the British regualtory standards for safety garments but htey are, at least, a range of hi-vis vests that don't sacrifice style.
With accidents at night twice as likely to lead to a fatality, research has shown that wearing a hi-vis vest increases the distance at which drivers can spot a pedestrian by up to 400 percent.
Comma's Mike Bewsey said, "If you break down at night and get out of the car, without hi-vis clothing you're effectively invisible. The traditional hi-vis vest, whilst functional, has been accused of being rather 'unflattering', which got us thinking about how it would look if there was a hi-vis vest that you weren't ashamed to wear."
Sarah Easterby, Fashion Lecturer at Oaklands College said, "It's a fantastic opportunity to work iwth Comma on this safety campaign and for Oaklands fashion students to take part in a live project and gain hands-on experience.
"This brief pushes the boundaries slightly but, I hope it reinforces the message that, however it looks, you should wear a high visibilty vest if you have to get out of your car by the side of the road. This project channels the students' creative energy through a different avenue and will hopefully help to prepare them for the fashion industry."
Comma's advice for any motorist who has the misfortune to break down at the side of the road is to put the visi vest on, vacate the car and move to a safe distance before calling and waiting for assistance. Mike Bewsey adds; "Our message about being safe and seen in the event of an accident or breakdown is a seriouus one but we hope this rather light-hearted approach will help raise awareness."

UK Batteries Opens New Glasgow Depot

UK Batteries has further strengthened its position as a leading supplier of battery products in Scotland by opening a brand-new distribution depot in Glasgow.
The decision to invest in a dedicated site in Scotland has been driven by UK Batteries’ desire to give its customers easy access to its market-leading battery brands that include the Platinum, Oldham, Crompton, and Tungstone names.
With the addition of Glasgow to its distribution network, UK Batteries now has 7 depots in the UK – giving excellent geographical coverage for customers.
“By opening a new depot in Glasgow, we will be able to give our ever-expanding customer base in Scotland an even stronger overall service package,” UK Batteries’ marketing and communications director, Neil Warren, explained.
“We have invested in our own dedicated fleet of vehicles and drivers to service our customers in the region. This means we can offer a more frequent delivery service, attend to our customers’ needs on site and it will also be much easier for us to collect scrap batteries for our very successful lead recycling programme.
“This is another positive step in the development of UK Batteries and illustrates our commitment to making sure our customers receive only the best products and service – two elements that are vital to the success of their own businesses.”
UK Batteries marked the official opening of its new distribution depot in Glasgow by treating some of its Scottish customers to a golf day at the exclusive St Andrews course – the venue for the 2010 Open Championship.

ACDelco Launch 20 New Clutch Kits

Parts giant ACDelco has launched 20 new three-piece clutch kits which come complete with a Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC).
The concentric slave cylinder assembly has been around for over 10 years and is designed to operate directly in front of the clutch cover assembly. By incorporating the hydraulic function (normally carried out by a conventional clutch slave cylinder) into the release bearing carrier, the unique design eliminates the need for complex and sometimes expensive clutch release fork and linkage mechanisms.
Direct hydraulic load applied to the clutch via the master cylinder and concentric slave cylinder provides less pedal effort, and overcomes the possible loss of bearing travel due to wear often associated with conventional linkage or cable type systems.
The new ACDelco kits cover many popular Ford and Vauxhall models including the Mondeo, Focus, Astra and Corsa and compliment the existing, comprehensive ACDelco clutch range for vehicles fitted with conventional release bearings.
Clutch kits are only one of a wide range of ACDelco vehicle components which include Filters (air, oil, fuel and cabin/pollen), Spark Plugs, Glow Plugs, Bulbs, Brake Pads, Shoes and Discs, Wiper Blades, Oils and Drive Belts (including Timing Belts).
ACDelco has been supplying high-quality parts (both OE & Aftermarket) for
over 100 years and is a subsidiary of the giant GM group.
ACDelco components are available from selected CAAR member stores. For more details on ACDelco and its products please click here.
